Student Protests
(2015-2017) Students across South Africa shut down universities calling for an end to the annual increases of tuition fees. Under the banner of #FeesMustFall, the student led protest movement also called for quality decolonized education, an end to the outsourcing of university staff and ultimately, free education for the poor.
In 2015 students led mass marches to Parliament as well as the Union Buildings which led Government to announce that there would be no tuition increase for 2016. However, protests continued in 2016 and 2017 once fee increases were reinstated, but from this point the movement started to lose momentum. The protests led government to create a bursary scheme for poor students.
