The Cape Minstrels
The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, also known as ‘Tweede Nuwe Jaar’ is an annual event held on the 2 January. The carnival dates back to the mid-19th century when slaves were given a day off to rest. With is comic dancing and outfits, the event was held as a mockery towards their masters.
During the festival, thousands of bright coloured, guitar and trumpet walking people march through the streets, giving the city a new life. An important part of Cape Town’s heritage, today, the event is a massive tourist attraction.
